FED:Higher priorities than new Iraq inquiry

CANBERRA, Aug 11 AAP - Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has dismissed a call for
a fresh inquiry into the Iraq war, saying there are more important priorities for Australia.

The push for a new examination of Australia's part in the conflict comes from independent
MP Andrew Wilkie who says there needs to be a full explanation of the reasons for our
involvement.

He wants former prime minister John Howard and his then foreign minister Alexander
Downer to front any inquiry.

Mr Abbott said the war in Iraq started eight years ago and everyone had moved on.

"Frankly I think there are higher priorities for the Australian government and the
Australian people at this time," he told reporters in Perth.

But any inquiry should look further than government ministers of the time.

"If we are talking about weapons of mass destruction, it was Kevin Rudd who as shadow
foreign minister was more adamant than anyone that Saddam Hussein did have weapons of
mass destruction," he said.

Mr Downer is standing by the Howard government's decision to send troops to Iraq.

The people of Iraq now had their freedom and lived in relative peace in a democratic society.

"So at least one part of the Arab world has found freedom and we helped give them that
freedom," he told ABC Radio.

Mr Wilkie's call comes a few days after the last Australian troops departed Iraq.

Combat troops withdrew in mid-2008 but a security detachment remained in Baghdad to
guard Australian diplomats.

Security responsibility has now been handed over to private security company Unity
Resources Group and the last 17 soldiers withdrew on August 6.

Mr Wilkie, a former army officer and intelligence analyst, quit the Office of National
Assessments in March 2003, publicly disputing claims Iraq posed a clear risk through its
possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Mr Wilkie said there needed to be a proper inquiry with very broad terms of reference
which looked at the behaviour of the political leadership.

"While the intelligence agencies did make some serious errors at the time, they were
never responsible for the war," he said.

Mr Wilkie said there had been two inquiries into intelligence agencies and intelligence
supplied to the government about Iraq's alleged possession of WMD.

But no light had ever been shone on the behaviour of Mr Howard and Mr Downer.

"They have never been made to sit down and explain why over many, many weeks and months
arguing about WMD and terrorism when it was very quickly apparent that the official case
for war was a lie," he said.

NSW: DOCS chief must take on responsibility or resign: Oppn

The New South Wales opposition says the head of the Department of Community Services
should be stood down .. after claiming that homeless teenagers in custody aren't the department's
responsibility.

Children's Court magistrate PAUL MULRONEY has criticised the department in a report
in today's Sun Herald .. saying many of the young people released by the courts end up
in sub-standard accommodation .. or actually stay in custody because there's nowhere for
them to go.

Opposition juvenile justice spokeswoman CATHERINE CUSACK says the department is trying
to wash its hands of its responsibility towards young people in trouble with the law.

Fed: Ted Kenna VC goes on display at war memorial

Fed: Ted Kenna VC goes on display at war memorial

By Max Blenkin, Defence Correspondent

CANBERRA, April 9 AAP - Rob Kenna says he doesn't understand what made his father,
Ted, do what he did to receive the Victoria Cross.

But he says his dad was determined not to be beaten under any circumstances - a resolve
he shared with other recipients of the nation's highest medal for bravery in the face
of the enemy.

Ted Kenna died last year, aged 90. His VC and other medals have now gone on display
at the Australian War Memorial.

He won his VC for an act of incandescent courage near Wewak, in Papua New Guinea, on
May 15, 1945, when he was a private in the Australian Army.

Memorial director Steve Gower said Pte Kenna was the last of Australia's 20 World War
II VC recipients.

"It's quite extraordinary to read the citation. It's very inspirational and it's the
very definition of valour," Rob Kenna said.

Pte Kenna's unit was pinned down by a Japanese machine gun. Without orders, he stood
in full view of the enemy less than 50 metres away, firing a Bren gun from the hip.

Return fire passed between his arms and body. With the Bren gun's ammunition expended,
he seized a rifle and shot dead the enemy gunner with his first round. He then killed
a second machine gunner with another shot.

Mr Gower said this was an act of amazing coolness, valour and gallantry.

"We are really honoured here at the Australian War Memorial to have this Victoria Cross
on loan. It's a wonderful gesture by the Kenna family," he said.

Rob Kenna, of Melbourne, said what made his father and other VC winners do what they
did was a question many asked.

"And I certainly haven't got the answer," he said.

"But I know what makes up the man. But studying other VC, there is a common thread.

It is not a one-off action.

"It is a resolve not to be beaten under any circumstances. In Dad's case he was a victim
of the Depression when he had to grow up tough and grow up quick. He lost his father at
15."

Mr Kenna said the family bonds and the mateship was formed at that time.

Throughout his long and happy life, Pte Kenna remained modest about his achievements.

"Why Dad was so humble about his VC and why VC winners are so humble in my opinion
is they know they left a lot of good men behind, a lot of brave men that didn't get recognised
for valour," Mr Kenna said.

"When Dad talked about his action, he talked about the men who saved his life, not
the lives he saved."

The Kenna VC takes the war memorial collection to 60 VCs awarded to Australians and
three British.

It is now on display in the Hall of Valour.

NSW: Heroin hidden in lollies: AFP

SYDNEY, Dec 12 AAP - A Sydney man has been charged after a kilogram of heroin was found
hidden inside packets of lollies posted to Australia from Vietnam.

The 24-year-old Chester Hill man was charged with importing a marketable quantity of
a border controlled drug, Australian Federal Police and Customs said in a joint statement
on Friday.

The investigation began on September 3 when Customs officers at the Sydney International
Mail Centre intercepted a parcel sent from Vietnam to an address in Bass Hill, in Sydney's
south-west.

About 1,080 grams of heroin was found inside 216 individual lollies.

The powder is undergoing forensic testing to determine its exact weight and purity.

Customs spokesman Catherine Asbridge said the alleged drug concealment was elaborate
and showed the lengths some traffickers would go to to smuggle drugs into Australia.

"As Customs and other law enforcement agencies persist in detecting the many and varied
methods of smuggling drugs, traffickers are trying new and creative concealment methods,
she said.

The 24-year-old is due to face Sydney Central Local Court on Friday.

Oly: Ocean flavour to Aussies' opening ceremony march

By Valkerie Mangnall

BEIJING, Aug 8 AAP - Our land is "girt by sea" and there was a distinct ocean feel
to the Australian athletes' uniform as they marched in the opening ceremony for the Beijing
Olympic Games tonight.

Desert ochre has featured before, as has the traditional green and gold of the wattle
tree, but not tonight.

Navy blue on the bottom and gradually fading through lighter hues to peak in a white
cap, the 230 or so competitors - about 70 per cent of the Australian team members in Beijing
- could have resembled waves bobbing as they strode proudly into the main stadium, known
as the Bird's Nest.

Designed by Australian fashion label Sportscraft, the outfit had been kept tightly under wraps.

It featured dark, three-quarter length cargo skirts for the women with tie-up detail
at the sides, and dark trousers with stylish belts for the men.

The team's polo shirts went from royal blue at the waist to light blue, ending in white
collars and were topped by lightweight sports jackets in the same pattern.

The athletes beamed and waved as they entered the arena third-to-last of the 205 nations
in keeping with the position of Australia in the Chinese alphabet.

They were led by flag bearer James Tomkins, a six-time Olympic rower who has won three
Olympic gold medals and one bronze.

The sky had been extremely hazy all evening and the air motionless, creating a steamy
atmosphere inside the open-air venue.

Many Australian athletes opted not to march in the conditions, particularly those with
events starting tomorrow, including the swimmers and road cyclists.

WA: Camp members vow to fight on after court rejects racism claim

WA: Camp members vow to fight on after court rejects racism claim

By Adam Gartrell

PERTH, April 13 AAP - Former members of a troubled Perth Aboriginal camp have vowed
to fight a Federal Court ruling that they were not racially discriminated against when
forced from their homes by the camp's closure.

The Swan Valley Noongar camp, led by high-profile elder Robert Bropho, was shut down
by the West Australian government in 2003 after an inquiry found child sex abuse was rife
at the site.

Mr Bropho's daughter, Bella Bropho, launched legal action, claiming the legislation
which forced them from the camp - the Reserves Act 2003 - was inconsistent with commonwealth
racial discrimination laws, and therefore invalid.

Ms Bropho wants the former inhabitants of the community - about 40 people, half of
them children - to be allowed to return to the camp, as well as damages from the state
government.

But Federal Court Justice Robert Nicholson today rejected the action, saying the Reserves
Act was "reasonable, proportional and legitimate in the circumstances".

"The alternatives, such as a memorandum of understanding or utilisation of the criminal
law, had been proven to be impracticable," a written summary of the judgment said.

The Reserves Act was in the public interest and consistent with racial discrimination
law, Justice Nicholson found.

Mr Bropho, himself convicted of molesting a teenager at the camp, said the legal fight
would go on until they were allowed to "go home".

"We're looking at going to the High Court of Australia and I'm starting to move over
the ocean to the United Nations," Mr Bropho told reporters.

Bella Bropho, who lived in the camp for over 20 years, described the decision as a
"slap in the face".

"It's very heartbreaking for us," she said.

"I'm really angry about the decision and it seems the government always get what they want.

"(But) we're never going to stop fighting."

Vested to the Noongar people in 1994, the camp was repeatedly the subject of rape,
child sex, violence and substance abuse allegations.

It also was allegedly the site of suspicious deaths, including that of 15-year-old
Susan Taylor, who was found hanging in a toilet block in February 1999.

A coroner found she had likely taken her life after years of sexual abuse and sniffing solvents.

Former WA premier, Geoff Gallop, labelled the community "a place of ruination and despair",
and said the closure was to prevent more people dying there.

PAC: Armed soldiers carry out raids in Fiji

SUVA, Dec 12 AAP - Armed Fijian soldiers have reportedly conducted a series of raids
in the capital, Suva, and the western city of Lautoka.

The Fiji Times website reports the soldiers raided the government's Information Technology
Centre (ITC) in Suva this morning and took its director Sailasa Taganesia to the army's
Strategic Headquarters for questioning.

Taganesia told the Fiji Times he was questioned for two hours by soldiers and was told
by army chief of staff Captain Esala Teleni he had been sacked.

Taganesia believes he was sacked because he followed orders by former finance ministry
chief executive Paula Uluinaceva to close the centre.

Uluinaceva was sacked yesterday by the military regime of army commander Frank Bainimarama,
which is systematically sacking government officials and public servants after seizing
power from prime minister Laisenia Qarase last week.

The Fiji Times also reports armed soldiers raided a house in Lautoka that was reportedly
bought recently by Fiji-born millionaire Ballu Khan.

Khan's company is in a joint venture with the Native Lands Trust Board that formed
Pacific Connex, one of two companies bidding for a licence to operate a mobile telephone
network in Fiji to battle Vodafone's monopoly.

Khan is currently overseas.

Armed soldiers also raided the Pacific Connex Suva office last week and removed some documents.

Qld: Trees save elderly anglers in Qld lake

By Alex Murdoch and John Sheed

BRISBANE, April 28 AAP - An elderly fisherman has spent 23 hours clinging to a tree
in the middle of a Queensland lake, just weeks after another elderly angler found himself
in a similar predicament in the same lake.

Ronald O'Connell, 71, from Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast, was fishing for Redclaw yesterday
on Lake Maraboon, near Emerald in central Queensland, when his dinghy was swamped by a
wave and sank about 9am (AEST).

He swam to a nearby tree branch which was protruding from the water and spent 23 hours
there before being found by rescuers today.

Just three weeks ago, 77-year-old Noel Herbert from Brisbane also survived by clinging
to a tree in the same lake for nine hours after his boat was swamped by a wave.

"They were hardy old characters - the both of them. Tough as old nails," Emerald Ambulance
paramedic George Thomson said.

He said Mr O'Connell was hungry and tired but otherwise in perfect health when he was found.

"All he wanted to do was have a feed and then go and have a drink with one of his mates
- he didn't want to stay with me," he said.

Mr Thomson said the overnight conditions had been very cool and, with Mr O'Connell's
flimsy clothing and advanced age, he couldn't believe he had not suffered exposure.

Mr O'Connell was today catching up on sleep.

"He's gone to bed now and is too tired to talk to anyone," Cathy Walsh from the Lake
Maraboon Holiday Village said.

Senior Sergeant John Lewis from Emerald police was also amazed that Mr O'Connell had
come through his ordeal unharmed.

"I know the police out there and the SES were astonished, to say the least, when he
hopped off the boat that picked him up and just walked off," he said.

"He was fine."

Exclaim Opens Office in High Point, N.C. to Serve Furniture Manufacturers & Retailers.

HIGH POINT, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999--

Exclaim Technologies, Inc., of San Jose, Calif. (Silicon Valley) has announced its intent to open an office in High Point, N.C., to serve as its primary contact point with the furniture industry.

The new High Point office reflects enthusiastic response in the furniture industry to Exclaim's online trading hub, which connects manufacturers and retailers of furniture and home products. The office, at a site to be determined, will be staffed with professionals from the furniture industry and will open later this year.

Having already developed business-to-business vertical hubs for fine art, collectibles, and gifts, Exclaim's Trade Exchange for the furniture industry will "go live" later this year.

Exclaim's strategy is to create e-commerce buying communities for home products, with furniture as the focal point.

Exclaim's office in High Point will be the central contact point for its relationships with all members of the furniture and home decor community.

"We see a natural connection from fine art all the way to furniture. That's why it is important that we have an office in High Point, which is the capital of the American furniture industry," said Rick McEachern, president of Exclaim Technologies. "Our role is to service furniture manufacturers and retailers with emerging Internet technologies. Our products will strengthen their businesses and their current channels of distribution."

Exclaim Technologies is an Internet Application Services Provider (ASP) that designs, develops and operates online business-to-business (B2B) trading communities to link manufacturers and retailers in vertical market segments. Exclaim also provides a suite of Internet management tools for retail companies.

. The reformed boy band's singer, Donny Wahlberg, revealed the plan as the group - who announced they were reuniting earlier this year - celebrated the launch of their comeback tour, which starts in September. Donny said: "It's very exciting. It's one big party and everyone wants to join us." The band held secret talks with Michael, 49, at his Nevada home last week. They are the latest in a string of artists - including Kanye West, will.i.am, Ne-Yo and Akon - rumoured to be working with him as he attempts to revive his career following his acquittal of child abuse charges three years ago. The 'Bad' singer was due to release his hotly anticipated new album later this year, but no release date has been announced yet. A source said: "He has been in the studio for months.Aa He wants to create an amazing album and won't release anything until he is totally satisfied." Meanwhile, Michael left his house in a wheelchair on Wednesday. During a trip to shops with his children - Prince, 11, Paris, ten, and six-year-old Blanket - a minder pushed the star in the chair. Michael wore pyjama bottoms for the outing, but covered his face in a mask, sunglasses, black towel and baseball cap.
